چکیده

The atmospheres of Mars and Titan are loaded with aerosols that impact remote sensing observations of their surface. Here we present the algorithm and the first applications of a radiative transfer model in spherical geometry designed for planetary data analysis. We first describe a fast Monte-Carlo code that takes advantage of symmetries and geometric redundancies. We then apply this model to observations of the surface of Mars and Titan at the terminator as acquired by OMEGA/Mars Express and VIMS/Cassini. These observations are used to probe the vertical distribution of aerosols down to the surface. On Mars, we find the scale height of dust particles to vary between 6 km and 12 km depending on season. Temporal variations in the vertical size distribution of aerosols are also highlighted. On Titan, an aerosols scale height of 80 ± 10 km is inferred, and the total optical depth is found to decrease with wavelength as a power-law with an exponent of 2.0 ± 0.4 from a value of 2.3 ± 0.5 at 1.08 lm. Once the aerosols properties have been constrained, the model is used to retrieve surface reflectance properties at high solar zenith angles and just after sunset. 2009 Elsevier Inc. The Vertical Structure of Martian Aerosols Explored Using a 3d Spherical Monte-carlo Model and Observations at the Terminator by Omega

Introduction: The OMEGA instrument onboard Mars Express has obtained several nadir observations of the surface of Mars at the boundary between day and night (the “terminator”) since early 2004. Even under clear atmospheric conditions, the path length of photons in the aerosols layer is high for such observations. In the dayside, almost all solar photons heading toward the surface are stopped by...

Positive-Shrinkage and Pretest Estimation in Multiple Regression: A Monte Carlo Study with Applications

Consider a problem of predicting a response variable using a set of covariates in a linear regression model. If it is a priori known or suspected that a subset of the covariates do not significantly contribute to the overall fit of the model, a restricted model that excludes these covariates, may be sufficient. If, on the other hand, the subset provides useful information, shrinkage meth...

Introduction: Monte Carlo calculation method is considered to be the most accurate method for dose calculation in radiotherapy. The purpose of this research is comparison between 6 MV Primus LINAC simulation output with commissioning data using EGSnrc and build a Monte Carlo geometry of 6 MV Primus LINAC as realistically as possible. The BEAMnrc and DOSXYZnrc (EGSnrc package) M...

The composition of liquid methane–nitrogen aerosols in Titan’s lower atmosphere from Monte Carlo simulations

Molecular level Monte Carlo simulations have been performed with various model potentials for the CH4–N2 vapor–liquid equilibrium at conditions prevalent in the atmosphere of Saturn’s moon Titan. With a single potential parameter adjustment to reproduce the vapor–liquid equilibrium at a higher temperature, Monte Carlo simulations are in excellent agreement with available laboratory measurements...

A method for range calculation of proton in liquid water: Validation study using Monte Carlo method and NIST data

Introduction: The main advantage of using ion beams over photons in radiotherapy is due to their inverse depth-dose profiles, allowing higher doses to tumors, while better sparing normal tissues. When calculating dose distributions with ion beams, one crucial point is the uncertainty of the Bragg-peak range. Recently great effort is devoted to enhance the accuracy of the comput...
